Research-Informed Violence Prevention and Public Awareness Initiative

Activities Objective Impact

The project involved structured interviews and field research within correctional and custodial facilities across Lagos State. Participants included individuals involved in offences relating to domestic violence, sexual violence, and related crimes.

The study sought to identify:

  • Risk factors associated with violent and abusive behaviour.
  • Common pathways leading to offending.
  • Attitudes, beliefs, and behavioural patterns linked to violence.
  • Social and environmental influences contributing to harmful conduct.
  • Opportunities for prevention, early intervention, and behavioural change.

Research findings were analysed and translated into evidence-based awareness messages and prevention campaigns designed to educate the public, challenge harmful behaviours, and promote safer relationships and communities.

The project further supported the development of strategic sensitization materials and community engagement initiatives aligned with the objectives of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response framework in Lagos State.

To conduct evidence-based research among individuals within the criminal justice system who had been charged with or convicted of offences related to domestic violence, sexual violence, rape, and other forms of interpersonal violence. The objective was to gain a deeper understanding of the behavioural, social, environmental, and situational factors associated with offending behaviour and use the findings to develop targeted violence prevention and public awareness interventions.

The research generated valuable insights into the underlying drivers of domestic and sexual violence and provided a foundation for targeted prevention strategies and public education initiatives.

Using the findings, a large-scale public awareness campaign was implemented across multiple sectors and communities, contributing to increased public understanding of domestic and sexual violence, available support services, and prevention measures.

Community Reach

Through coordinated community engagement, sensitization programs, stakeholder outreach, and public education activities, the project reached an estimated:

1.8 Million Residents
